Report of September 27th 2004

By Jerry Ruhlow

Tarpon action continues fast and furious on the northern Caribbean coast, where Dan Wise at Barra Colorado, reports the Phil Hoover, who come down every year about this time is back again, and the eight anglers in his party last Sunday hooked more than 70 tarpon and brought 29 to the boat for release.

Similar action further up river, where Bob Hohl, reports 19 anglers fishing at Casamar last week had over 500 tarpon in the air, with 130 caught and released. He said Casamar is almost totally booked from now through October and likely longer.

If you want to get in on some of the best tarpon fishing in the world, you better run - don't walk - to your computer and get on our website for reservations. Or, you can call me at our Costa Rica office toll-free from the U.S. and Canada at 1-800 308-3394. Website is www.costaricaoutdoors.com

Big news from the southern Pacific coast this past week, where Internationally-know light-tackle angler Enrico Capozzi added still another world record to his impressive list with a 11.5 pound mutton snapper taken on 12-pound-test line fishing last week with Capt. Bobby McGinnis on the Sweet Dreams, out of Golfito.

According to a report from Dar Randall in Golfito, this brings Capozzi's total IGFA records to 33 since he first entered the International Game Fish Association's record book in March of 2000 with black marlin weighing 159 pounds on four-pound line and another 152 pounder on two pound, along with a 218-pound striped marlin on four-pound line.

Capozzi returned to Costa Rica in August of the same year to nail the striped marlin four-pound test record with a 218 pounder and a 735-pound black marlin on six-pound line, Randall said.

A sprinkling of sailfish, tuna and dorado is reported further north along the Pacific coast, with Mike Pruitt nailing an impressive 180 pound yellowfin tuna on the Hoo's Up, out of Los Sueños.

Things at Arenal continue much as reported last week, where guide Tersio Hidalgo says they are getting a lot of rainbow bass to two kilos working surface lures and spinner baits inshore.
