San José is a loud and busy city. It is the capital of Costa Rica and stand in the intermountain Central Valley and is the centre of the Metropolitan area, which covers 170 km2. Like many other places in the Republic, it can boast sites of historic interest, which tell us the gradual peaceful and democratic road travelled by the people of Costa Rica and which also indicates the national will to climb ever higher. Hence we will find in the capital a rich variety of architectural styles also in the hotels ranging from Colonial Style to ultra modern designs like the Hotel Radisson Europa. Residential areas have sprung up all over the metropolitan area and due to the design both of the infrastructure of services and communications, many of this areas have become self-contained cities within the larger city. San José It presents itself more like a cosmopolitan town if you compare it with other Central American Capitals, You'll find big malls, fast-food chains, restaurants and big department stores.
After a few days you start realizing the differences, find the old market and the traffic-free always crowded central avenue with its smiling and friendly people. Just try to ask your way around. You'll get a honest help from most everybody with a big smile on the face. The Capital was founded in 1737 there is little left from that Colonial Area. Until they build the National Theatre in 1890, San José was just a little unimportant town. Also the country as a whole is making big efforts to preserve the environment. In San José you feel little of that effort. Noise and pollution from Street Traffic is a big problem in the Capital.
In San José you will not have problems to find space in over a hundred nice hotels. There is an abundance of small big Deluxe Hotels like the Five Star Radisson Europa Hotel, Several Barceló Hotels like the Barceló San José Palacio and the perfect hotels to enjoy Costa Rica's Nightlife in the Centre of Town like The Hotel Del Rey or President, the Casino Morazán and the Hotel Balmoral right in the heart of the Capital. If you are on a budget, the Hotel Diana's Inn is also right in the Centre is the perfect location right across from the huge Holiday Inn.
Near and around San José there are some absolute beauties of Hotels like The Alta Hotel with one of the finest Restaurants. For longer stays but also for a short stay with all the luxuries of a privat home there is a new concept of Apartotel offered by Casa Conde Apartotels. This Apartotel is located in nearby Desamparados a suburb that offers everything plus the proximity to Downtown San José and Highways.
