Canopy, Butterflies, Snakes, and Souvenirs
After a scenic drive through the country-side of the Guanacaste lowlands, into the woods and through small creeks, you'll get to this isolated place in the middle of nowhere. Surprisingly you'll find a large open-air restaurant, some cages with birds and monkeys, a butterfly garden, snake terrarium and a pretty large souvenir store. All this is for you to enjoy before or after the guided Canopy Tour.
Then the tour continues to Puerto Ballena on the Peninsula Nicoya you'll take a comfortable seat in a covered boat and a small channel will take you to the Río Tempisque. There, some large crocodiles are waiting for this tour to get a chicken lunch from the captain and the capuchin monkeys are expecting some bananas.
One of the White-faced Capuchins even grabbed a piece of banana out of the little hands of our 9 month old son Wolfgang, who was just about to put it in his mouth. If you are like me, interested in taking some incredible pictures of animals that normally are a little wilder, that is the tour for you. It was here where I could take some of my best monkey pictures so far.
But not just crocodiles in all sizes and monkeys, we also saw all kinds of water-fowl, iguanas, bats, and basilisks. At the end of the boat-ride a short drive will take you to a tiny community where you will enjoy some of the best typical country-lunches we ever had.
