In High Season the hike is shorter
During the High- or Dry-Season you can drive up half-way to the caves. In this case your hike is only 1½ hours instead of 3 hours. From that half way point on, it is a beautiful; even walk through one of the few remaining tropical dry forests of Costa Rica.
Once you reach the entrance of the cave called Terciopelo, you'll meet two additional guides. One will keep a safety line, while you descend about 18 Meters (50ft) down on a sturdy aluminum ladder. The other guide is down there and will guide you over a pretty slippery rocky ground.
There are several halls that can be visited. Each one is filled with stalactites and stalagmites. I personally stayed in the first hall. The pass way to the next one is very tight and I did not want to take an extra risk with my large camera. But Ivan my son took pictures there with our underwater camera.
Back out in the daylight you'll proceed with a 15 minutes walk to a small wooden covered look-out with an absolutely breathtaking 180º view over the lowlands of the Peninsula Nicoya all the way to the Gulf of Nicoya.
