Most Rent a Car companies will bring your car to certain hotels near the airport and San José without any extra charge. Try to avoid driving in San José, unless you are used to narrow streets, complicated one-way systems, heavy traffic and thefts from cars. If you still have to drive through town keep your windows little up and doors locked when luggage is visible. Don't hang your gold watch out the window
Despite of all the warnings on this page, to rent a car is the best way to see Costa Rica. Specially if you are interested in nature and remote areas. If you go to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, take your car to the Cahuita National Park and Beach. You will find one of the nicest beach stretches in Costa Rica and the best way to get there is with a rented car.
