History
This canton began to develop when the banana plantaions moved in from the Caribbean region is 1938 and a landing strip was built. Puerto Cortés used to be the principal point of communication between that region and the city of Puntarenas through vessels that arrived by sea.
General Description
The river basins are of the rivers of the Osa Peninsula, Barum Esquinas and Térraba. The main agricultural products are rive, cacao, corn, sorghum, beans and palm oil. Palm oil replaced bananas when it became more profitable.
Interesting Sites
The Curré Indian Reservation is in the Palmar District; the Dulce Gulf Forest Reserve and the Corcovado Nacional PArk are in the Sierpe District.
