History
The are still descendents of the Brunca Indians living in the area. The Spanish arrived in 1519. Costa Ricans resettled the area in 1874. Development was propelled by the banana plantations and the construction of the Inter-American Highway. The banana companies pulled out in 1984. High unemployment was eased by the opening of a free port and the development of tourism.

General Description
The canton has a palm oil processing plant and produces palm oil, rice, cacao, corn, beans and beef. The canton is drained by the rivers Esquinas, Coto Colorado, Conte, Golfito, Sábalo and Manzanillo which drain into the Dulce Gulf.

There are 11 coastal zones that have been declared apt for tourism, including Zancudo Beach, Purto Jim The are still descendents of the Brunca Indians living in the area.
