History
The region was settled by Huetar Indians and then discovered by the Spanish in 1522. The main village disappeared in 11746. Development began in 1930 with the banana industry. The canton is named Aguirre in honor Rolando Aguirre Lobo who made significant contributions.
General Description
Since the canton is formed from both tectonic and sedimentary rock, it was necessary tos et management policies for 39% of the area´s soils and to dedicate 15% of the land to protected areas. It is drained by the rivers SAvegre, Hatillo, Guaba, Portalon and Bard. Chief products are palm, beans, sorghum, tobacco and banana.
Interesting Sites
Manuel Antonio Nacional Park in the Quepos District is one of the country´s most popular tourist spots. The beaches are great and the wildlife abundant.
Climate
The climate is very warm since elevation is only 15m above sea level.
