History
The Voto Indians were the first inhabitants of the region. The region was settled by the Spanish and later by Costa Ricans in order to open up an access route to the San Juan River.
General Description
Sarapiquí borders Nicaragua, San Carlos, Grecia and Alajuela. It is drained by the rivers Sarapiquí, Chirripó and Cureña. Its principal products are coffee, corn, cacao, cardamos, bananas, palm hearts, fruit trees and cattle.
Interesting Sites
The canton includes large conservation zones of the Cordillera Volcánica Central Forest Reserve, Braulio Carrillo Park, and the La Selva Protective Zone.
