History
The canton gets its name from the chapel dedicated to Saint Domingo, a name first given to the barrio, then to the district, and finally to the canton.
General Description
Santo Domingo sits at the foot of Mount Zurquí and produces some of the finest coffee in Costa Rica. Coffee continues to be the chief agricultural product. The canton is drained by the rivers Virilla and Bermúdez.
Interesting Sites
The building styles date back to when coffee was king (1860-1930) except for the morís-style Rosario Church. It is notable that there are many colonial houses made of adobe and Word, and others made from the beginning of the Century made from brick.
