History
The popular version of the name´s origin is that a Franciscan monk gave a citizen named Bárbara an image of Saint Barbara which she used to make an alter in her house.
General Description
The area is drained by the rivers La Cruz, Rosales, Ciruelas and Protrerillos. Coffee, sugarcane and vegetables are the principal products.
Interesting Sites
Part of the canton pertain to the Greater Metropolitan Area, but 17% of Santa Bárbara is dedicated to the Cordillera Volcánica Central Forest Reserve.
