History
San Rafael was once called Piedra Grande, but in 1818 the name changad to San Rafael…a name cosen by lottery as province authorities chose the names of canton from a selection of saints.
General Description
The canton is drained by the rivers Segundo, Burío, Pirro, Tibás, and tributaries of the Grande de Tárcoles. The area produces coffee, vegetables and sugar cane.
Interesting Sites
San Rafael has a beautiful gothic-syle church. Other places of public interest include the Bosque del Río de la Hoja (Leaf River Forest), the Paradera Monte de la Cruz and the Castillo Puente Piedra.
