History
The canton was inhabitied by Huetar Indians when the Spanish arrived in 1791. Belén developed in the mid-Ninteenth Century as coffee was exported to European markets and the canton provided an important rest point between San José and the port in Putarenas.
General Description
Belón stretches over a flan plain area and is drained by the rivers Virilla and Río Segundo. Its main products are coffee, sugar cane, rice, beans, tomatoes, onions, corn and cattle.
Interesting Sites
Belén is part of the Greater Metropolitan Area. There is a popular swimming resort for locals, Ojo de Agua, and an important electrical generating plant is also found there.
Climate
The climate is quite pleasant with temperaturas averaging 21.7 Degrees Celcius.
