History
The area was first settled by indigenous peoples of the Huetar Kingdom and then by the Spanish. This area was designated as a confinement zone for offenders of minor crimes. The name comes from the Turrialba River.
General Description
The terrain is irregular with valleys and hilly areas, and is drained by the rivers Pacuare, Reventazón, Parismina and Matina. Agriculture produce includes coffee, sugarcane, corn, pejibaye, macadamia, nuts, fruits, tubers and cattle.
Interesting Sites
Within this area yu´ll find indigenous communities of Bajo Chirripó and Chirripó (or Alto Chirripó). Turrialba, being located midway between San José and Limón, has experienced phenomenal growth recently.
