History
The territory of this canton was inhabited by indigineous peoples of the Huetar Kingdom. In 1681, construction began on a church in the Ujarrás valley dedicated to the Virgin Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción del Recate. In 1955, its ruins were declared a national monument. In 1948, El Paraíso was established as a canton.

General Description
The area is drained by the rivers Reventazón, Cuericí, Villegas, dos Amigos, Quirí, Purisil, Macho and Paloma. Farming is the region´s most important economic activity and main crops include coffee, sugarcane, chayote, tomato, vegetables, legumes, flowers, beef and dairy.

Interesting Sites
Orosi is a very popular tourist zone and has several swimming resorts with naturally heated water (Los Martíinez, Los Patios, and Hotel Río). Cachí Dam forms a large lake in the valley and the winding, scenic route with look-out restaurants provide a great day out for any visitor.
