History
The canton was first settled after 1850. The first city, Juan Viñas, was originally called El Naranjo (The Orange).
General Description
The terrain is very uneven making for an extremely varied climate. The canton is drained by the many tributaries of the Reventazón River that run throughout. The principal economic activities include sugarcane, livestock and coffee. The canton even has its own sugar mill.
Interesting Sites
The region includes the Río Macho and Tapantí Forest Reserves. Juan Viñas is considered one of the more picturesque areas in the country.
