History
The area was inhabited by indigenous peoples of pre-Columbian eras, and settled by white settlers from San Pedro in the early 20th Century. The canton was named after Father Joseé Joaquín Alvarado, the first parrish priest of Pacayas.
General Description
The canton extendí over the southern slopes of Iraza and Turrialba volcanoes and drained by the rivers Reventazón, Parismina, Turrialba and Chirripó. Most people make their living from farming. There is a potato factory,”Industria de Papas Tostadas Riquis”.

Popular tourist attractions include Irazú Volcano National Park, the Cordillera Volcánica Central Forest Reserve, the El Salto Waterfall and the old Santa Teresa Church.
