History
The canton was founded in 1949. Sarchí was made the canton seat in 1963.
General Description
The area is drained into the Caribbean basin by the Sarapiquí River and into the Pacific by the Tárcoles River. Coffee and sugar cane are important to the local economy. The arts and crafts are internationally famous and employs 60% of the population. Here you can find handmade furniture and wood crafts as well as hand painted ox carts.
Places of Interest
Hundreds of tourists arrive each day, especially in Sarchí. Within the canton's jurisdiction are forest preserves and the Póas Volcano National Park.
