History
The name Poás comes from the comes from the name that the settlers gave the area - Pús (barbs or thorns) - because of the thorns of many blackberry bushes found growing there. The first village established was San Pedro de la Calabaza which is now the canton seat.
General Description
The zone is drained by the Grande de Tárcoles and Saraprquí Rivers.The principal product is sugar cane but coffee, beans, corn, tapioca, ornamental plants and dairy are also important.
Places of Interest
The most popular tourist attractions of the area are the Póas Volcano and the Grecia Forest Reserve.

The canton is 1,148 meters above sea level with chilly temperatures of 11.5 degrees celcius.
