History
Palmares, meaning Palm Grove, got its name from the large number of royal palm trees that were there when the area was first settled.
General Description
Palmares is situated in the foothills of the Aguacate Mountains. It is drained by the Mora, Azul, Fierro and Grande Rivers. The principal product is coffee grown in large quantity and of excellent quality. Beef, tobacco and "cañ india" are also produced.
Places of Interest
Palmares has one of the most beautiful churches in the country, made completely out of stone. Also in Palmares, there is a private orchids park open to the public.

The canton is 1,050 meters above sea level and the average temperature is 22 degrees celcius.
