History
The development of the area began with the Ox Cart trails in 1843 and then the mines in 1862, the lumber industry and cattle.
General Description
The land is mostly flat and the soils are extremely fertile. The area is drained by the Grande de Tárcoles, Machuca and Cuarros Rivers. The area produces beans, corn and fine woods, but it is especially well known for its fruits.
Places of Interest
The canton sustains itself primarily from fruit as well as gold and kaolin mining. The town of Orotina is 66 km from San José and is a convenient stopping point along the highway toward Jacó.
Climate
At an altitude of only 229 meters, its climate is hot and it receives a relatively small amount of rain. The average temperature is about 27 degrees celcius.
