History
The canton was founded in 1970 but was originally part of Grecia. There are different versions of the names origin. One has to do with the abundance of chiles at one time. The other version is that farmers came to tell "chiles" which are jokes recounting their adventures.
General Description
The area belongs to the water basins of Pocosol, Frío and Zapote. People make their living by raising beans, rice, cacoa, corn, beef, dairy and lumber.
Places of Interest
The canton is linked to San Carlos by a good road. For tourists, Caño Negro is an ideal trip where a large variety of wildlife from monkeys to falmingos to colorful Iguanas can be seen.
