History
The area officially became a canton in 1915 and is named after a national hero, Juan Alfaro Ruiz. Zarcero is named after the sarsaparilla plant that grows in the region.
General Description
The area is drained by the San Carlos and Sarapiquí Rivers. The most important products are dairy, vegetables and flowers. The canton is famous for its cheese and sour cream (natilla).
Places of Interest
Zarcero is worth visiting. It is linked to Naranjo and San Carlos by a good road. The park is world-famous for its large number of hand-crafted bushes into shapes of people and animals. The decor of the church is the work of self-taught artist, Misael solis.
