It contains premontane secondary forest, which is important for the conservation of the drainage basin that provides the Hojancha town with its water. It is also an excellent place for bird watching. The Montealto Foundation has opened a museum there and offers facilities for nature tourism and biological research. A 6 km earth track goes from Hojancha to this protection zone.
