This steep protected area is quite wet and still conserves most of its primary forests. Some of the tree species that occur here are Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata), gonzalo alves (Astonium graveolens) and purpleheart (Peltogyne purpurea), three of the fancy woods from Costa Rica. This protection zone is very important for drainage basin conservation. Some dirt roads branch off from the Puriscal-Parrita highway and allow one to go a little way into this protected area.
