It protects the last patches of forest remaining in these hills, particularly in the steepest parts. the vegetation is typical of intermediate altitude forest where oaks (Quercus spp.) occur. The drainage basins here provide the water for the towns in the lowlands, including the city of Escazú. There are view of all the Central Valley from any point in this protection zone. Roads from San Antonio and other small towns in Escazú allow one to go a little way into this protection zone.
