Arenal - Tilarán and Arenal - Huetar Norte Conservation Area, Alajuela

This is a palustrine wetland that includes this lagoon bordered by holillo stands – almost exclusively made up of holillo palm (Raphia taedigera) – and flooded forests. These forests serve as a feeding and breeding area for 240 species of birds, including the muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) and the jabiru (Jabiru mycteria), both of which are endangered. There are lots of caymans (Caiman crocodiles). Dirt roads lead from Upala to the lagoon.
