Laguna Arenal, Costa Rica's largest lake, is the nations undisputed windsurfing center and, from December to march, is considered one of the three best windsurfing spots in the world. Winds are often strong and steady, especially at the western end during the dry season. The lake has a year-round water temperature of 18ºC to 21ºC with 1m-high swells and winds averaging 20 knots in the dry season, a little less in the wet. May, June, September, and October are the least windy month; December to February are the windiest.
Maximum winds often go over 30 knots, and windless days are a rarity. The consistently high winds attract experienced windsurfers - beginners will require expert instructions. Complete windsurfing equipment is available for rent in several hotels at the west end of the lake.
