Golfito, a hidden Treasure between the Forest and the Sea
Golfito is an oasis of civilization in the heart of Southern Pacific Costa Rica. It offers the services of a small town as well as easy access by car or plane.
It was established as the only Tax Free Import Zone in Costa Rica, 15 years ago, after the United Fruit Banana Company left the region.
If you want action, here you can snorkel, surf (Playa Pavones has the third best waves in the world), rent horses, kayak, or fish for both sport and recreation. And for those who want a more relaxed experience, go to the beaches or take boat tour to see dolphins and whales.
One of many options is to visit in Golfito is the "Cascadas y Senderos Avellan" (Avellan Waterfalls and Paths), a private reserve located alongside Piedras Blancas (White Stones) National Park. And only 20 minutes from Golfito, you will find the Casa Orquidea (Orquid House) Botanical Garden. The Mirador La Torre (the Tower Lookout), where you can enjoy the splendor of Golfo Dulce, is also in the area.
You can take a small boat tour on the calm gulf waters where you will see beach after beach of exuberant vegetation. The boat passes by Pelican Island, a popular bird lovers' destination. Then off through the hidden canals of the old Banana Plantations which can only be navigated during high tides. You'll pass by Playa Azul, Puntarenitas, and Bajo Mansito Beaches to name only a few. And then there is Playa San Joseito by Piedras Blancas National Park - a park solely accessible by boat.
At Casa Orquidea botanical garden, you will be personally attended to by the US-Costa Rican family, the McCallisters, for a two and a half hour tour of over seven acres of garden. Here you can find about 1,000 different plant species and 130 species of orquids. (The garden is open everyday except Friday.)
And then there is the beach. Playa Zancudo is 11 km long and recognized for its beauty and cleanliness. There you can enjoy rustic local restaurants, stores and public bathroom services.
All of these adventures will tempt you. And there is much more to discover. Golfito is a destination people come back to.
