Squirrel monkeys travel in small or medium sized groups
The Central American Squirrel Monkey (mono titi; Saimiri oerstedii. Weighing less than 1kg, these are the smallest, rarest, and most endangered Costa Rican monkeys. Over half of their 63 to 68cm length is a non-prehinsile tail. The back and legs are golden brown, the tail is olive brown with a black tuft at the tip, the chest is light colored, the neck, ears and areas around the eyes are white, and the cap and muzzle are black. They travel in small to medium size groups during the day, squealing and chirping noisily and leaping and crashing through vegetation in search of insects and fruit in the middle and lower levels of lowland forests. They exist only in isolated areas of the mid and south Pacific coastal rainforests. Manuel Antonio and Corcovado National Parks (especially around Sirena) are good places to see them.
