Some of the most commonly seen rainforest mammals

Some large rodents are among the most commonly seen rainforest mammals, including the Central American agouti (guatusa; Dasyprocta punctata) and the paca (tepezcuintle; Agouti paca), which are relatives of the guinea pig.

The agouti is diurnal and terrestrial and found in forests from the coast up to 2000m. It looks like an oversize between a rabbit and a squirrel, with a barely visible tail and short ears. The color is a variable brownish gray. A chunky, brownish, apparently tailless mammal of about 4kg and 40cm to 60cm in length running on the forest floor is probably and agouti.
