About the Northern Plains Region
If your are heading north from San José over the volcanic ridges of the Central Cordillera, you soon will arrive in the tropical lowlands. These lowlands also called Llanuras del Norte or Northern Plains, start at 40 km north of San José all way to Nicaragua and beyond. It includes the northern halves of the Provinces Alajuela and Heredia. The original vegetation of much of the Northern Plains is mixed tropical Forests, that becomes increasingly green, as on heads more to the Caribbean. The dry season is shorter and not so dry. We find several wonderful place for nature lover in the area.
One is the Selva Verde Lodge near Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí in the Province of Heredia.
In the more remote areas near the Nicaraguan Border, especially in the Llanuras de San Carlos and the Llanuras de los Guatusos, the pastureland floods extensively during the wet season, creating vast swamps and lakes. One of such an area is protected and is called Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre.
