Heredia City and Province
Heredia is the Capital of the Costa Rican Province with the same name. Most people think of it only as of the area around its capital, Volcano Barva and San José de La Montaña. But Heredia stretches all way up to Nicaragua and offers some of the nicest Nature adventures along the River Sarapiquí, Canopy Tours, White Water Rafting and Bird watching. Near Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí you'll find the famous Biological Station and Lodge Selva Verde. From there you can enjoy all kind of guided tours and boat rides on the river.
The city of Heredia was founded in 1706. It is its still Colonial character, that makes a visit so interesting. From the Central Park one can see most of the old buildings. The Church called La Immaculada Concepción was built in 1797 and is still in use. The elevation of Heredia is 1150m it also offers a National University with a sizable student population.
Heredia is only half the size of Alajuela and offers a more small-town colonial air as neighbouring Alajuela.
