There are 14 species of turtles

Some are marine and others freshwater or terrestrial turtles. The freshwater ones are often seen sunning in a row on top of a log; as a boat approaches, they quietly slip off, one by one to lay their eggs - a spectacular sight. The largest is elys coriacea), which has a carapace (shell) up to 1.6m though 500kg individuals have been recorded. Watch them is a memorable experience. Tens of thousands of females may emerge at the Parque Nacional Tortuguero section in the Caribbean.
