Costa Rica has 17 owl species.

As elsewhere, they are nocturnal hunter~and are more often heard than seen. They have various hooting, drumming, screeching, and other slightly eerie calls, mainly heard at night or at dawn and dusk. One species of owl that will occasionally hunt during the day is the widely distributed spectacled owl (buho de anteojos; Pulsatrix perspicillata). It's one of the larger owls, 48cm in length with conspicuous white markings around the eyes, forming spectacles. Others are generally smaller, but all have the typical owl appearance.
