Since its independence from Spain in 1821, Costa Rica has been building a unique model of rural democracy which can be traced back to the colonial period. Costa Rica's social homogeneity as well as its egalitarian and progressive will are rooted in the latter period. It was at this time when the Spanish conquerors had to work together with the scarce native population.

The peace and human rights are crucial in Costa Rica where there is a strong middle class that is politically dominant. Today, its cosmopolitan capital city that shelters over 1 million inhabitants evidences the rapid improvements in this nation. In San José, you will find museums, modern art exhibits, as well as a magnificent National Theatre, a National Symphony Orchestra, a youth Symphony Orchestra, numerous dance and theatre studios, a full-year theatre season, with at least eight plays to choose from, and some theatres among which the Melico Salazar outstands as being the forum for popular culture.
