Eventually they returned to the States, stayed there a few years, and when in 1989 time for retirement arrived, their natural choice of a place in which to settle was Costa Rica. Through the years they repeatedly told me they wanted to stay forever and take only occasional trips to the States to visit friends and relatives. For them living in a retirement village in the States is out of the question. They want to stay until the end and be buried in the country that extended its friendly arms to them. Their daughter also lives in Costa Rica.
Taking everything into account, retirees have realized that if they returned to their home country they would not be able to live as well as they are now in their new location. Here they live with less money and enjoy some amenities which they cannot back home mainly because of their high cost. How many families in the States or Western Europe can afford to have a maid work for them legally 5 days a week for $200 a month as they can in Costa Rica?
