It was from the early 1970s onward that jungle lodges began to spring up and activities undertaken such as deep sea fishing, white water rafting, bird-watching, visiting butterfly farrows, taking aerial tram rides over the tree tops, surfing, kayaking, windsurfing, swimming in natural thermal springs, taking volcanic cosmetic mud baths, entering stalactite caverns, floating down quiet rivers, and many others. And then someone else always comes up with an idea for a new tourist attraction.
In recent years rural tourism has grown rapidly throughout the country and many farmers have been introducing on their properties activities of interest to tourists. An office of the United Nations in San Jose has been trying to promote this development as a way of offering farmers more opportunities of obtaining an additional income.
The very nature of the geography and topography of Costa Rica, where different climates, lakes and beaches exist within a few hours drive, makes it possible for a wide-awake entrepreneur to see new opportunities in tourism and take advantage of them. Just visiting several of the wonderful National Parks is a come-on for tourists and opportunities exist for new businesses to be built around them.
