Guard Dog Training

Up in the cool mountain area along the Inter-American Highway 30 miles south of Cartago, at El Empalme, an ex-Miami couple, Robert and CarIa Dover, established their USA K-9 Academy to offer an obedience and protection course mainly to German Shepherds. The TicoTimes mentions the experience in dog training and veterinary medicine the couple obtained in Miami and how they went about setting up their small enterprise in Costa Rica. The Dovers charge $350 for a four to five weeks course in which the dogs work 15 minutes three times a day. They say this schedule keeps the dogs happy and their owners contented too because positive results are guaranteed. As the people in Costa Rica become more security-conscious, it's expected that more owners of homes, factories, farms and other installations will use this guard dog training service.

Laundering and Investigating

Thomas Hoy settled in the town of Heredia where he opened an efficient laundry and dry cleaning service on eighth avenue. But most of his time is spent managing his AMlPM Investigations and Security International. With more than 40 years of experience in the United States, Hoy offers in Costa Rica several types of investigation such as civil, criminal sub-rosa, assets, matrimonial, missing persons, background studies, body guard and protection.

Tourist Attractions

Thirty years ago the wonderful ecology of Costa Rica was just beginning to get known outside the country. Not many knew at that time that Costa Rica had the widest variety of fauna and flora in all of Latin America. Practically the only places for tourists to go to then were the two volcanoes, Irazú and Poas, and take a car ride on narrow roads around the Central Valley to see the spectacular countryside dotted with its nicely painted faro houses and their well-kept front yards. Or perhaps take a train ride to the Caribbean port of Limon or to Puntarenas on the Pacific.

Other than that, there was not much else to see except the country's beautiful women. But then the Americans and other foreigners came who immediately saw opportunities, where most local businessmen did not, to develop numerous tourist attractions which later proved to be very profitable enterprises. The natural environment was literally a gold mine to be developed and it seems only outsiders saw the potential.
