About Cahuita and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Cahuita is a small village about 43 km southeast of Puerto Limón. It is a perfect location for swimming and snorkelling and wonderful Caribbean food at Chao's Paradise and Típico Luci.
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a few kilometres further south from Cahuita and is a also a small town, locally just called Puerto Viejo but should not be confused with Puerto Viejo of Sarapiquí. Here besides some of the best surfing 'Salsa Brava break' you'll find lots of good restaurants like Mis Sam for the best 'Rice and Beans' and one called Salsa Brava where we had some of the best and freshest (still alive when we ordered) Lobster ever.

Come here in September and October, the Caribbean Summer
Cahuita and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca are famous in Costa Rica because of the Caribbean Summer, starting at the end of August till the beginning of November, which in other places of the country usually is the the season with most rain.
Here you will find endless unspoiled beaches, wonderful snorkelling at Cahuita Beach, and Playa Chiquita, as well as icredible surfing at Playa Puerto Viejo, Playa Manzanillo and Punta Uva, breath-taking nature like a 60 m high Ceiba at the hotel Shawandha Lodge, Green Iguanas, the Cahuita National Park, Coco-nut palms and Cocoa trees.
If you want to become active, the possibilities here are almost endless. You'll find tours called the Talamanca Chocolate Trail, with herbs and medicinal plants, and rides in the canals, to snorkelling, SCUBA diving, kayaking, bird-watching, swimming, as well as tours to the Bri Bri Indigenous, Iguana-farms, Waterfalls, and Nature Reserves.
